ROLL UP, ROLL UP! And witness the amazing wonders in Dr Finklestein's collection of crazy curiosities...
This is such a massive project I have no idea where to begin explaining it.
The arm was a sculpting project. A friend who has the most poppy-outey veins I have ever seen consented to me making a mould of his arm. I then cast it in oil clay, cleaned it up and sculpted in the wounds, moulded in fiberglass and cast it in silicone. It contains a robotic mechanism that makes the fingers twitch when you turn the wheel on the front.
But how to present it? Display cabinet was made over about a week, all out of scrap timber and wooden mechanisms that make the arm move. It's based on the old-school 'automata'.
All the inside was basically the most screwed-up stuff I could think of. I even grossed myself out doing it a few times.
The bunny is actually an homage to 'Nail Bunny' from the Johnny the Homicidal Maniac comics
The outside was inspired by 'Carnivale' style travelling shows. It was also an attempt to balance out the gore of the piece, as it was exhibited in Nov 2011 and I was afraid of it being banned from the show
And yes, it's Dr Finklestein as in the Nightmare Before Christmas. I thought it was a cool name for something like this.
